I've never thought this recording had very much in the way of HF extension, many of the tracks have always on every format sounded rather muted and rolled off in the highs to me, perhaps a reaction to that early solid-state sound by the content creators? What I mean by that is though it's a recording we are all familiar with, and it does sound good, it is also an example of the use of early solid-state studio gear that many artists and producers found to be in need of significant manipulation in order to sound acceptable. I can hear the difference but I also am the kind of dork who analyzes audio for "fun".Ĭlick to expand.I'm not sure about that, but I would say this is perhaps a bad recording to try to use in forming overall conclusions about the sound of any given streaming service, or DAC etc. If anything my little comparison here confirms to me that I don't think most people will give a rat's behind about high res, as in this kind of setup, the difference is pretty subtle. The bonus tracks, etc, are not surprisingly less polished overall. and this is what my main rig usually conveys as the biggest difference. I prefer this version, as it has a better sense of the space around things. Generally a bit more open and natural but not by a huge degree - can't tell if its the services or the limits of how I'm listening. Everything seems a bit.exaggerated but not by any huge degree? Has a very slight edge to it. Highs can be a bit strident here and there. which actually works for some songs in making them seem more exciting at first blush. Midrange seems more forward/congested which is something I always feel when listening to MP3 quality. Spotify: The Spotify stream of Deja Vu 50th seems a bit louder though I don't know if it is. 24/192 out of Qobuz but I"m not sure what's actually coming out of my headphone jack. Well, low-rent comparison here: using the web player for both Spotify and Qobuz, with a fairly nice pair of earbuds straight from my computer's audio jack.
